Following the third state championship season in school history, expectations are high heading into the year.

The Jaguars, however, have seen many changes in the structure of the team. After an incredible career at South, head football coach Greg Oder decided to pass the torch down to his colleague, Jon Oyler. The Jags lost a strong group of seniors but believe they have a strong team coming back.

“We have a great group of kids leading our team. They care about each other and have a team mindset,” said Oyler.

In the first game of the season the Jags faced perennial power, Lee’s Summit West. The game was competitive through the first half but took a strange turn at the start of the third quarter.

With the Jaguars trailing the Titans 21-14 to start the second half, thunder rumbled in the horizon.

Hopeful that the storm would pass, the officials let play continue. About a minute into the third quarter lightning struck and illuminated the entire stadium. With the fear of a player or spectator would be in danger, students were instructed to go to either the auxiliary gym or their cars. The teams retreated to the locker rooms.

The game was rescheduled to the next day at 11 am.

After a hard fought battle the Jaguars were defeated by the Titans 35-23.

Senior linebacker Collin West explains why he believes the game one loss will not determine the fait of the teams season.

“The way our team has bonded already reminds me of last year. We don’t want to live in the past but I believe last season’s team paved the way for us to stay hungry,” said West.
