Wrestling looks for leadership

Boys wrestling has gotten off to an even 1-1 record to start the season with a 37-30 win at Raytown on November 29 and a 49-30 loss to Lee’s Summit North on December 6.

Head wrestling coach Doug Black talked about how the team looks to improve on their loss to Lee’s Summit North.

“We just need to make a lot of progress and get better each day in our practices and in our meets.” Black said.

The team doesn’t expect to be competitive immediately because of lack of experience.

“It’s been tough trying to build leadership with only two seniors on the squad.” Black said.

Junior Brady Childers talked about the new season and his predictions for state individually.

“This season so far has been going good for the team. This season is going good and we get better each match, but it will be a little rough because of our lack of experience. This year I hope to medal. The schools that were added to the district are tough, so I hope to push through them and make it to State,” Childers said.

Childers and the wrestlers look to take multiple people to the state tournament in February.

The next match for the wrestlers is December 20 at Liberty High School.
