Most of us at one point or another have complained about the serious lack of Disney titles on our favorite streaming sites such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, or Hulu. We have long awaited the day when all our princess movies and nostalgic tv shows are together in one place, and now our dreams have come true. Disney plus is a brand-new streaming service that dropped on November 12th, brought to us by Disney themselves.
Disney plus is a collection of most of the movies and tv shows that Disney owns including; Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm, and National Geographic. Disney currently has movies and tv shows from the time that Disney was created, to ones that are airing right now.
Disney also has some “Disney plus exclusives” that you can only watch if you subscribe to their site. Exclusive shows come out with new episodes every Friday to keep subscribers on the edge of their seats. These exclusives include “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series”, “Star Wars: The Mandalorian”, and “Marvel Studios: The Falcon and the Winter Soldier”.
Out of the exclusives, many people are excited about “The Mandalorian”, this is the first live-action TV show about the Star Wars series. The Mandalorian is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order. We follow the adventures of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic.
The site also includes 21st Century Fox titles such as “The Simpsons” and “The Sound of Music”.
This service is really good so far, but there are a few things missing. Though they have included a lot of older TV shows and movies that we all loved as kids, they are lacking crucial shows such as “The Proud Family” and “American Dragon: Jake Long”. Disney has included “The Proud Family Movie” but wasn’t able to provide us with the show.
In addition to these missing faves, Disney was unable to include any of the Spider-Man movies due to Sony owning them. This limits their Marvel collection to having the Avengers, Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor. Also featuring newer heroes like Doctor Strange, Captain Marvel, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Ant Man. But for what the marvel section lacks in movies, they make up for in animated series and a whole section for the “Spider-Verse”.
Disney is a company that seems like they take a lot out of your pocket, but Disney plus is cheaper than most other streaming sites, at $6.99 per month and $69.99 per year. They also offer more usage for cheaper, where Netflix offers 2 screens for $12.99 a month, Disney offers 4 screens for $6.99. Disney is also offering a bundle of Hulu and ESPN+ for only an additional seven dollars per month.
Disney is not the only company coming out with a streaming service. Apple TV+, Peacock, HBO max, AT&T TV, and many more are coming out soon or have dropped recently. All these companies are beginning to stream in order to compete with Netflix and Amazon Prime for the most capital.
Because of all these new services, it is impossible for consumers to subscribe to all of them. After you do the math, streaming Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, and Disney plus will cost more than your cable bill.
This creates a problem. With all these new services, consumers can’t pay for all of them. Some of them will be forced to shut down while others grow.
In order to compete with the new-found appeal in Disney, other services are adding some new titles. Netflix is adding as much Nickelodeon and Netflix originals as they can, whereas Hulu has Cartoon Network.
The battle to the top of this industry will take quite a chunk out of consumers pockets, but with a line-up like this, it seems as though it will all be worth it.
