The coronavirus first appeared in the central Chinese city of Wuhan. Over 800 people have died, with the first death being outside of mainland China. The United States have confirmed 12 cases of the coronavirus. Coronaviruses can lead to illnesses such as fevers, coughing, and difficulty breathing. There have been hundreds of casualties caused by the virus. The death toll in China keeps rising. There are over 30,000 confirmed cases in mainland China, and infected more than 24,600 people in over 25 countries and territories spanning North America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, according to CNN.
Nearly 60 million people have been on full or partial lockdown in Chinese cities. Several countries have sent planes to evacuate foreign citizens under lockdown in Wuhan. Over 3,500 are held on ships in Japan including hundreds of Americans. There is no treatment for this fatal disease, and researchers and scientists are racing around trying to make a coronavirus vaccine. The concerns are growing over the impact to the economy.
The 12 cases of the coronavirus across 6 different states include: Arizona, California, Illinois, Massachusetts, Washington, and Wisconsin. There will be 200 test kits distributed to U.S. labs. Another 200 will be distributed to select international labs. Each kit can be used to perform tests on 700 to 800 patient samples. 8 Americans were dianosed with the virus on a cruise ship held in Japan accoring to the New York Times.
Beyond China and the US, the virus has spread to 23 other countries. Australia, Cambodia, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Nepal, the Philippines, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Taiwan, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates, the UK, and Vietnam.
