This year’s Dig for the Cure was a great event which resulted in the junior varsity volleyball team beating Blue Springs and Varsity losing, and all teams helped with raising money for the Jake Cavanaugh Foundation.

The girls had already played Blue Springs this season, and both South teams won in two sets each. This time around, Blue Springs varsity stepped up and won 25-21 in the first set and 25-19 in the second set. Coach Dave MacLean says their loss was due to inconsistent play and defensive breakdowns. MacLean describes the game’s effects on their season.

“We were able to catch them earlier in the year, but tonight they were clearly the better team and deserving of the Conference Title. Not many people would have picked us to finish second in Conference, so we still felt our regular season was a success but are disappointed in how it ended,” MacLean said.

The event itself was very memorable. Both schools’ Super Fans prepared entertaining dance routines that gave the Glitter Girls and Touch of Silver a run for their money. It may not have been South’s night on the scoreboard but it was everyone’s night when it came to the cause of the game. Dig for the Cure raised money for the Jake Cavanaugh Foundation providing funding for osteosarcoma research and support to children and families affected by cancer. Junior Genna Berg explains the purpose of the game.

“The Dig for a Cure game is a fundraiser for cancer and it’s a good way to get everyone together. This year is really cool because the money’s going locally to the Cavanaugh family,” Berg said.
