Gucci Mane’s new album “Mr. Davis” disappoints

Mason Rhodes, Reporter

Gucci Mane is a very respected music producer and has had some very good albums in the past. “Mr. Davis“ though isn’t one of those albums.

Gucci Mane is someone who has really good connections in the rap community so he is always able to get pretty solid features. This album featured some very popular artists such as, A$AP Rocky, Slim Jxmmi, Young Dolph, The Weekend, Chris Brown, ScHoolboy Q , and each of the Migos members.

If you’re looking at the album just based on the features, you’d probably think it was going to be amazing, and that’s what I did. It was a mistake to say the least. This album was very average, although it did have a few stand out songs such as “I Get The bag” feat. Migos and “ Tone It Down” feat. Chris Brown that will probably carry it in album sales because the other songs aren’t hitting to well.

One of the issues I have with Gucci is the fact that he sounds like a feature in his own songs. In “ Stunting Ain’t Nuthin” feat Slim Jxmmi and Young Dolph, Gucci had one verse that was okay and the rest of the song was Dolph and Jxmmi  bodying the track. Gucci doesn’t make the hits; his features do. I can’t think of a song from Gucci that was a hit that he didn’t have features on.

One more song carried by a feature is “Lil Story” featuring ScHoolboy Q. Q hops on the track and absolutely destroys it, in a good way. His flow perfectly accompanied the beat provided on the song. Gucci isn’t that bad on this song, and the chorus is entirely him and it’s actually pretty decent. His verse alone, though, isn’t very strong, and is very much so outshined by that of ScHoolboy Q.

Another problem I have with Gucci is that he drops too much music. I don’t criticize people very often for dropping a lot of music because that’s what people are always asking for, but Gucci drops a new album every two months and I feel like he is drowning us in music so much to the point to where we don’t enjoy it any more. When you drop so much music you don’t give your music a chance to be listened to.

With all of that being said this album was a let down but it had bright spots as well. “ I Get The Bag” feat. Migos was a huge hit that I’ve been listening to since the release.

This album wasn’t my favorite, but it wasn’t my least favorite either. Gucci will probably have another album out by the end of the year, so he will have a chance at redemption and I think it will probably be better than this one.
