Matthew Swanson is a retiring teacher at Blue Springs South.
Why did you get into teaching?
Because I felt a calling to help people learn. I have a deep commitment to continual learning and wanted to pass that on.
Where did you go to school HS & College?
I went to High School in Edina, MN. I graduated from Arizona State University in Tempe, AZ
Where did you grow up?
I grew up in Edina, MN. It is a suburb of Minneapolis, MN
Plans for after retirement
I will be continuing my Voice Acting business and doing a lot of traveling. Jamaica, Italy, Glacier National Park, and Africa in 2025 and 2026.
Hobbies and Interests?
I love all things outdoors. Hunting, hiking, biking, golf, etc… I also brew my own beer and play pickleball.
Family?
I have two children, one son and one daughter. My son is a very successful engineer who is a partner in a small engineering firm here in Lee’s Summit. My daughter is a fifth grade teacher at Chapel Lake Elementary School. She is working on her Specialist Degree and is looking to become a Principal.
Why did you retire this year?
I reached age 60 and did not want to wait any longer to travel.
Have you teached/worked at any other school?
I taught at Delta Woods Middle School for 5 years, Ray-Pec East Middle School for 5 years, and at Odessa High School for one year where I started their boys and girls soccer program at the High School. I have been at South for the last 3 years.
What will you miss the most?
I will miss coaching both the girls and boys soccer teams (JV) the most.
Favorite memory?
Being part of the coaching team that finally got to see the girls soccer team make it to the State Tournament last year.
