South’s English department now houses a new teacher.
Whitney Awalt says she loves the variety of each day as a teacher.
“I wanted to be a teacher because I like having every day be different, and I like helping people achieve their goals,” she says.
Prior to coming to South, she worked at Belton High School for nine years and went to three different universities. She firstly got a bachelor’s in advertising from University of Nebraska-Lincoln, then a master’s in curriculum and instruction from UMKC, and finally a master’s in educational technology from Park University.
As for choosing English, Awalt values the skills that comes from the subject.
“I chose English because I love to read and write,” says Awalt, “and I also think that communicating well is one of the most important skills you can have.”
She is also eager to make new connections with the people at South.
“I am most excited to get to know the students and staff and to get new opportunities to grow in my profession,” says Awalt.
As a teacher, she hopes to be able to help students be successful.
“My philosophy is that every student is capable and worthy of success,” says Awalt.
When not at school, Awalt likes to go to live events.
“I enjoy going to concerts, sporting events, and traveling,” Awalt says. “I enjoy reading, crossword puzzles, and spending time at the pool.”
Nearly a year ago, Awalt was married to her husband.
“My husband and I got married last October. I have two children, Jack and Willa. Jack is almost 11 and Willa is 8,” she says.
Overall, Awalt loves being able to help and make relationships with her students.
“My favorite part of being a teacher is getting to know my students and helping them learn and grow,” she says.
