South revives a former club

After a few years of not having one, The Gay Straight Alliance club is making a comeback at Blue Springs South.

The student-led club was brought back to Blue Springs South because of the recurring interest and requests. Senior Bianca Reed and junior Gage Shrader helped bring back the club with the help of English teachers Ashleigh Bertrand and Jason Strait.

Reed wanted a club like GSA for years throughout her high school career and knew people who felt the same way.

“I heard a lot of people very interested in the idea, including myself. It was something I really wanted, and knowing other people wanted it as much as I did I had to start it up,” Reed said.

The purpose of the Gay Straight Alliance club is to be a place where one can feel a sense of belonging and acceptance. The club is open to people no matter gender, age, sexual orientation. Bertrand wants everyone to feel welcomed and thinks it could be beneficial to some students.

“Students could benefit from this club because they are around like-minded people where they feel comfortable, a place they feel welcomed,” Bertrand said.

Shrader also thinks GSA is a space where everyone can feel welcomed and feel themselves.

“People who identify as LGBTQ can sometimes experience times where they feel left out. GSA is a space with like-minded people who accept them for who they are. There are also people who don’t identify as LGBTQ, who are straight but still want to support people and help create a space for those people,” Shrader said.

The club has had only two meetings so far and the members are still in the process of planning thing out. Reed is looking forward to what is to come for the club.

“I am looking forward to getting to know everyone and grow closer and to learn and talk about things like current issues. I want to have discussions and help education and inform and just have a good time,” Reed said.

If you are interested in joining GSA talk to Bertrand or Strait. GSA meetings are currently planned to take place on the first Mondays of every month in room 319.
