Girls basketball gets off to strong start

The girl’s basketball team has started the season with a 3-1 record.

They are hopeful for the season, setting goals to win conference and winning some championships.

There are seven seniors on the team this year.

Senior point guard Tiffany Davenport looks forward to her last season before she continues her career at Truman State University.

“The first two games were successful,” Davenport said.

Her comments on their loss against St. Teresa’s Academy showed both matureness and optimism going forward.

“I think that we can learn from that and we can become a better team because of it,” Davenport said.

Both Davenport and senior Naia Tauai believe that a big part in being a successful team is by being close not just as a team but as friends.

“One of our strengths is our team unity. We are really good friends on and off the court, which I think helps our chemistry on the court,” Tauai said.

After the Jaguars played Monday against Raytown in their third game of the season, coach Brad Oyler said that he saw the game as one to get them back on track. South won the game in comfortable fashion.

When asked about their victory against the Blue Jays, Oyler’s response was simple.

“You gotta protect your home-floor,” he said.

Oyler said that the team has a lot of returners who finished the end of the season strong last year.

“I expect to build on that and be one of the top teams in the Kansas City area,”

The team has set its goals early and hopes to be district champions and to go as far as they can go. They hope to spring into a strong start heading into winter break, putting them into good position heading into conference play.

Although this year’s team has many strengths, Oyler believes chemistry will play a major roll in their success.

“They work hard, play well together, play hard and they get along, and they have fun while doing that.” said Oyler.

The Jaguars started their conference schedule against Lee’s Summit last night and will be back in action Monday against Lee’s Summit West at home.
