The boy’s football team has officially smashed through all expectations this year with its 5-0 start to the season

The team has created a certain chemistry and bond that has stood out in the first half of the season. It is certainly evident as to their record.

Senior Micah Mayberry, the starting cornerback said, “We just are always around each other, through the off-season and even since little kids we have been playing with and against each other.”

This has allowed them to focus on the little aspects of the game that make a difference when you are practicing, to whether you’re playing in a game.

Mayberry said, “The coaches have been pushing us hard and encouraging us to do things right instead of doing things that are natural.”

Coach Greg Oder said, “We try and emphasize on the little things so we can make the bigger things better.”

No matter what the football team’s record ends up being, they still accomplished something that South hasn’t done in recent years.  They beat cross town rival Blue Springs, 27-24, on Sept. 4. The Jags were winning for most of the game, but then Blue springs crept back into the game, but the team held them off at the end of the game.

Mayberry said, “It meant a lot of us to beat Blue Springs because we know a lot of the players over there. We have been playing with them since we were little.

Senior Adam Cofield said, “we just all knew our responsibility, then we went out and did them.”

On Sept. 25, the Jags beat Raytown 51-14. The game was essentially over after the first half with the Jags putting in their second and third strings, and Raytown didn’t even score until the fourth quarter.

This homecoming weekend the Jags face their most difficult opponent so far. They play Lee’s Summit West, who is also one of the best in the Suburban Big Six. Their record is 5-1 with their only lost to Lee’s Summit North. They are ranked 31th in the state, according to maxpreps.com.

Oder said, “They, by far, have the best record out of any team we have played. They barely lost last week; they had a miscue at the end of the game that caused them the loss. They could easily be 6-0 right now,”

Junior Jerome Hawkins said, “we just need to stay focused and do our responsibilities and we can come out of that game with a win.”

Oder said, “This game has a lot riding on it because the way to start of the homecoming weekend is with this win.”
